Tips for Preventing and Removing Rust

Preventing and Removing Rust, a Never Ending Problem…

house cleaning nj tips remove rust

Seems like rust has been around since the dawn of time, or at least since the Iron Age, although I doubt cavemen called it rust at that time. Thousands of years later, and people still haven’t figured out a way to stop it. Preventing and removing rust is a constant battle.

But through our trial and error experience, we’ve found some methods of cleaning and preventing rust that work well. Today, we are going to share our secret. Our secret is “Dawn”. That’s right, the dish detergent.

Since most stainless steel appliance made today are made with steel and iron, both of which rust with the right combination of water and air, a soft cleaning works best to prevent rust. That’s our combination of Dawn, a small amount of baking soda, and warm water. For more stubborn stains, a specialty stainless steel cleaner applied with a rag usually does the trick, Keep in mind, stainless steel is best cleaned with cleaning agents that do not contain chlorides (chlorine, iodine, bromine) as these agents will eat at the stainless steel surface exposing it to potential rust.

On older appliance, once rust is formed, we find a new cleaning approach is needed. That’s when we switch to a product called Bar Keeper’s Friend Soft Cleanser. This product has been around for 140 years and with good reason, it works! Wipe on with a soft sponge; let the cleaner sit on the metal for an hour before removing it with a mildly abrasive sponge. As with any metal, always rinse with warm water and towel dry for best results.

Tips to Clean Stubborn Tile Grout

Cleaning Tile Grout

Whether it is flooring tile or shower tile grout, it can definitely be stubborn to clean. Kitchen and housing tile grout is porous, so it absorbs liquid and dirt, and mildew can quickly develop in the bathroom. Preventing the “dirty, stained grout look” is a constant struggle. Lets face it, cleaning tile grout is an unpleasant problem.

Over the years, we finally decided on our best method of cleaning tile grout, getting the best results by simply cleaning in two passes. The first pass we use a mixture of vinegar and water, applied with a rag or sponge, this quick pass removes most of the initial mildew and such. For the second pass, we use a soft toothbrush or scrub brush with soft bristles and commercial cleaning agent that contains bleach. Spray the surface and let it sit for 15 minutes on the grout before brushing. The bleach will delay the growth of future mildew, but should only be used in well-ventilated areas. Simply only the window and let the fresh spring air in.

Commercially, Dustbusters offers tile and grout cleaning using our truck mounted power washer. Spinning over a hundreds of revolutions per minute, this monster of a machine will quickly clean large rooms and remove stubborn stains from high traffic areas. Ideal service for office buildings, schools, municipal buildings, and libraries.

Residential or commercial tiles once cleaned and dried overnight, a silicone grout sealer can be applied annually. This protective measure will prolong the life of your tiles and grout. And make future cleaning less time consuming with better results.

I should stress that you should never use ammonia or abrasive, scrubbing products. These products can scratch the tiles and remove chunks of grout. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Helpful Tips and Uses for Dryer Sheets

Helpful Tips and Uses for Dryer Sheets

house cleaning nj tips cleaning dryer sheets

A quick Google search and you can find a hundred different uses for dryer sheets. Some ideas work better than others, but who has the time to test all these ideas. Well, since we are in the cleaning profession, we made it our business to test some of these alternative ideas to save you the time. We’ve narrowed it down to our top 7 tips for new dryer sheets:

1. Most people like the smell of perfumed sachets in your clothes drawers, but the cost really adds up quickly. A fresh smelling sheet is a readily available and cost effective alternative.

2. Tape a dryer sheet to the inside of your heating and air conditioning vents. It gives off a great fresh scent and a much better alternative to scented candles which can pose a fire danger.

3. Summertime picnics are awesome with family and friends. Great food and cold drinks round out what could be a perfect day if it wasn’t for the bugs and mosquitoes. Wiping a dryer sheet on your bare arms and legs is tends to keep them at away.

4. Pets pull at our heart string, but their hair gets everywhere. Use a dryer sheet to clean hair off your clothing, furniture and cushions.

5. A burnt on pot or pan sometimes seems impossible to clean. We’ve all tried soaking it in soapy water overnight and found this helps, but adding a sheet to that same water overnight make a big difference.

6. If you still hold onto old photo albums like I do, a fresh sheet will keep the album from developing that musty smell that we associate with old library books, lol.

Lastly, a used dryer sheet can be recycled to clean out the lint trap. We love the idea of recycling and being green. Congested lint traps make dryers less efficient, translating to a higher energy bill to get the job done. More importantly, it’s a fire hazard.

Do you like cleaning wood floors as much as we do?

If you like a cleaning wood floors as much as we do, follow these cleaning tips….

nj house cleaning tips cleaning wooden floors

With kids and pets, keeping your wood floors clean is definitely a challenge. Ideally, your wood floors would have that shiny look without a waxy feel that can be a slip and fall hazard. So what’s the best method for cleaning wooden floors? Well the answer depends on what type of flooring you have.

New homes, or older homes with new floors, most likely have wooden floor coating that is stain and water resistant. They are the easiest to clean, because new cleaning tools like a wet swifter can make the job quick and easy. Simply dampen the swifter pad with the paired cleaning solution and it picks up dust and hair with ease. With a little elbow grease, it removes sticky spill residue without getting on your knees. It’s easy enough to do yourself if you have the time, or for your trusted cleaning company.

Older homes may have oil stained or untreated floors. We like to use a liquid paste wax designed specifically for wood. It will clean and polish in the same single pass. As a bonus, the same paste can be applied to wood paneling and wooden kitchen cabinets. And always allow 10-15 minutes for drying.

Regardless of the type of floors you have, a homemade mixture of warm water and Neutral Safe wood cleaning product will do the job between more thorough cleaning. I should stress that you should never use ammonia or abrasive, scrubbing products. These products can scratch and damage your floors. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
