Passover House Cleaning – Checklist or System?

Passover Cleaning Checklist

When we first began cleaning homes in preparation for the Passover event, we knew our dedicated team was prepared for the challenge. But over time, our “Passover cleaning checklist” developed more into a “Passover cleaning system”.

Passover Cleaning System

How did our checklist evolve into a system? By better connecting with our clients to better meet the needs and expectations of the Jewish community. Our many repeat customers are a testament to the success of our “system”. Fine-tuned over the years, new customers get the benefit of our experience and efficient system.

Don’t believe us? Why else would we recommend new customers to ask for references and to feel free to contact us with any questions. We have nothing to hide and are proud of our success when it comes to Passover house cleaning.

To our current customers, THANK YOU!

Your repeat business reaffirms our belief that our cleaning methodology works.

Preparing for Pesach and Passover House Cleaning

“Chametz” House Cleaning

Jewish families take pride in the fact that they follow traditions that are hundreds, maybe thousands of years old, passing them down to the next generation. And they should be proud; it takes discipline and perseverance, all qualities instilled in their children. It’s through tradition that brings us to the subject of cleaning your house in preparation for Passover, or Pesach.

Cleaning for Passover or Pesach goes beyond what many people consider “normal” or everyday house cleaning. Passover house cleaning involves paying attention to the smallest of details, a top to bottom house cleaning to remove every last food crumb throughout the house, even the car. Once an area is cleaned, keeping it that way is maintained by prohibiting food from the area until Passover is complete. Even the kitchen, the room designated for eating in most homes, is considered off limits and quite often is covered in tin foil as an extra precaution.

Knowing the effort a thorough Pesach house cleaning will take, many Jewish families look for help in the form of hiring a cleaning company that they can trust. Make no mistake; selecting the right cleaning company can be a daunting task. We believe trust is earned, not given or assumed. So we identified what we believe the most important factors in selecting a “trusted” cleaning company for Passover:

EXPERIENCE – Ideally, you should focus on the cleaning company’s previous experience in providing Passover house cleaning services. Simply put, there is no substitute for experience.

REFERENCES – Don’t be afraid to ask for them. A reputable cleaning company will not only provide them upon request, but rather will promote them. Our repeat customers are one of the strongest references any business can have. And we gladly provide them upon request.

RECOMMENDATIONS – Neighbors, we all have them. Talk to them and ask them who they trust to clean their homes for Passover. Letting strangers into your home takes a leap of faith. If your neighbor had a bad experience with a particular cleaning company, we can all learn from it and not repeat the mistake.

INTERVIEW – One you’ve narrowed down your selection of cleaning companies. Call them and schedule an interview. Ask to speak to the owner and determine if they are actively involved in the actual cleaning or if they just hire people to do it for them. Obviously, individually owner owned and operated cleaning companies take more pride in their work. After all, their reputation is on the line!

We know how important Passover house cleaning is to your family. As a family owned small business, we will respect and treat your home like our own. Please contact me, Cinthia, with any questions or concerns.

Tips for Preventing and Removing Rust

Preventing and Removing Rust, a Never Ending Problem…

house cleaning nj tips remove rust

Seems like rust has been around since the dawn of time, or at least since the Iron Age, although I doubt cavemen called it rust at that time. Thousands of years later, and people still haven’t figured out a way to stop it. Preventing and removing rust is a constant battle.

But through our trial and error experience, we’ve found some methods of cleaning and preventing rust that work well. Today, we are going to share our secret. Our secret is “Dawn”. That’s right, the dish detergent.

Since most stainless steel appliance made today are made with steel and iron, both of which rust with the right combination of water and air, a soft cleaning works best to prevent rust. That’s our combination of Dawn, a small amount of baking soda, and warm water. For more stubborn stains, a specialty stainless steel cleaner applied with a rag usually does the trick, Keep in mind, stainless steel is best cleaned with cleaning agents that do not contain chlorides (chlorine, iodine, bromine) as these agents will eat at the stainless steel surface exposing it to potential rust.

On older appliance, once rust is formed, we find a new cleaning approach is needed. That’s when we switch to a product called Bar Keeper’s Friend Soft Cleanser. This product has been around for 140 years and with good reason, it works! Wipe on with a soft sponge; let the cleaner sit on the metal for an hour before removing it with a mildly abrasive sponge. As with any metal, always rinse with warm water and towel dry for best results.

Tips to Clean Stubborn Tile Grout

Cleaning Tile Grout

Whether it is flooring tile or shower tile grout, it can definitely be stubborn to clean. Kitchen and housing tile grout is porous, so it absorbs liquid and dirt, and mildew can quickly develop in the bathroom. Preventing the “dirty, stained grout look” is a constant struggle. Lets face it, cleaning tile grout is an unpleasant problem.

Over the years, we finally decided on our best method of cleaning tile grout, getting the best results by simply cleaning in two passes. The first pass we use a mixture of vinegar and water, applied with a rag or sponge, this quick pass removes most of the initial mildew and such. For the second pass, we use a soft toothbrush or scrub brush with soft bristles and commercial cleaning agent that contains bleach. Spray the surface and let it sit for 15 minutes on the grout before brushing. The bleach will delay the growth of future mildew, but should only be used in well-ventilated areas. Simply only the window and let the fresh spring air in.

Commercially, Dustbusters offers tile and grout cleaning using our truck mounted power washer. Spinning over a hundreds of revolutions per minute, this monster of a machine will quickly clean large rooms and remove stubborn stains from high traffic areas. Ideal service for office buildings, schools, municipal buildings, and libraries.

Residential or commercial tiles once cleaned and dried overnight, a silicone grout sealer can be applied annually. This protective measure will prolong the life of your tiles and grout. And make future cleaning less time consuming with better results.

I should stress that you should never use ammonia or abrasive, scrubbing products. These products can scratch the tiles and remove chunks of grout. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Helpful Tips and Uses for Dryer Sheets

Helpful Tips and Uses for Dryer Sheets

house cleaning nj tips cleaning dryer sheets

A quick Google search and you can find a hundred different uses for dryer sheets. Some ideas work better than others, but who has the time to test all these ideas. Well, since we are in the cleaning profession, we made it our business to test some of these alternative ideas to save you the time. We’ve narrowed it down to our top 7 tips for new dryer sheets:

1. Most people like the smell of perfumed sachets in your clothes drawers, but the cost really adds up quickly. A fresh smelling sheet is a readily available and cost effective alternative.

2. Tape a dryer sheet to the inside of your heating and air conditioning vents. It gives off a great fresh scent and a much better alternative to scented candles which can pose a fire danger.

3. Summertime picnics are awesome with family and friends. Great food and cold drinks round out what could be a perfect day if it wasn’t for the bugs and mosquitoes. Wiping a dryer sheet on your bare arms and legs is tends to keep them at away.

4. Pets pull at our heart string, but their hair gets everywhere. Use a dryer sheet to clean hair off your clothing, furniture and cushions.

5. A burnt on pot or pan sometimes seems impossible to clean. We’ve all tried soaking it in soapy water overnight and found this helps, but adding a sheet to that same water overnight make a big difference.

6. If you still hold onto old photo albums like I do, a fresh sheet will keep the album from developing that musty smell that we associate with old library books, lol.

Lastly, a used dryer sheet can be recycled to clean out the lint trap. We love the idea of recycling and being green. Congested lint traps make dryers less efficient, translating to a higher energy bill to get the job done. More importantly, it’s a fire hazard.

Do you like cleaning wood floors as much as we do?

If you like a cleaning wood floors as much as we do, follow these cleaning tips….

nj house cleaning tips cleaning wooden floors

With kids and pets, keeping your wood floors clean is definitely a challenge. Ideally, your wood floors would have that shiny look without a waxy feel that can be a slip and fall hazard. So what’s the best method for cleaning wooden floors? Well the answer depends on what type of flooring you have.

New homes, or older homes with new floors, most likely have wooden floor coating that is stain and water resistant. They are the easiest to clean, because new cleaning tools like a wet swifter can make the job quick and easy. Simply dampen the swifter pad with the paired cleaning solution and it picks up dust and hair with ease. With a little elbow grease, it removes sticky spill residue without getting on your knees. It’s easy enough to do yourself if you have the time, or for your trusted cleaning company.

Older homes may have oil stained or untreated floors. We like to use a liquid paste wax designed specifically for wood. It will clean and polish in the same single pass. As a bonus, the same paste can be applied to wood paneling and wooden kitchen cabinets. And always allow 10-15 minutes for drying.

Regardless of the type of floors you have, a homemade mixture of warm water and Neutral Safe wood cleaning product will do the job between more thorough cleaning. I should stress that you should never use ammonia or abrasive, scrubbing products. These products can scratch and damage your floors. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

The Importance of Hiring an Insured Cleaning Company

Selecting the Right Cleaning Company – An Insured Cleaning Company!

Finding the perfect cleaning company isn’t as easy as looking on the Internet and going with the first option you see. There are always so many diverse factors to consider. You should look for a respected business that has a good reputation and that’s been around for a while. A strong track record can say it all. You should look for a business that gets glowing reviews from customers. You should also look for one that’s fully insured. Relying on a cleaning company that’s not insured can be a significant liability for you, believe it or not. If you want to protect yourself from the headaches of lawsuits and lost productivity, insured companies are your only option.

Protect Your Property From Damage

It’s important to keep your property in tiptop condition. It doesn’t matter if you hire cleaning service for a home or for a business. It can be a risk to hire a cleaning company that’s not insured. It isn’t unheard of for professional cleaners to accidentally damage properties. It isn’t unheard of for professional cleaners to break possessions during the cleaning process, either. It isn’t even unusual for things to get misplaced or lost while cleaners are on the premises. If you want to protect yourself from nonstop worries about extensive property damage, lost valuables and beyond, an insured company is the only way to go, period. A trustworthy cleaning company should be equipped with an insurance policy that covers any and all damages. If you opt for an insured company, you safeguard yourself from all types of stresses. Who wants to panic about the thought of a broken antique vase? Who wants to worry about a noticeable spill on a rare and expensive Persian rug? Insured companies can give you a sense of relaxation that’s unsurpassed.

Save Yourself From the Frustration of Time-Consuming Lawsuits

You need to hire an insured cleaning company for another major reason that goes beyond protecting your property from possible damages and losses. Insured cleaning companies have insurance on their employees. If a professional cleaner who works for an insured business visits your property and injures herself, you don’t have to fret about the scary thought of paying her costly medical bills. You don’t have to fret about the idea of lengthy and stressful lawsuits, either. No one on the planet wants to deal with lawsuits. No one wants to have to think about dealing with exorbitant medical bills. So many things can go wrong without insurance. A cleaning technician can fall off a ladder and hit her head. She can fall into a swimming pool while cleaning outdoor spaces, too.

Take Your Time

There are many highly regarded cleaning companies out there. Why take the chance of dealing with a cleaning business that’s not completely insured? Cleaning companies that respect their customers make a point to get insurance. Insurance is a protective measure for so many reasons. It can give people comfort and peace of mind as well. Those things are priceless. It’s never worth it to go with a cleaning firm that’s not insured. It’s never a good idea to go with an independent cleaner who isn’t part of a larger insured organization, either. It may sometimes cost you less to go with an uninsured firm or cleaning professional, but that’s a dangerous game to play. Medical bills can be extremely expensive. Being responsible for a cleaner’s steep medical bills can be a significant burden. That’s the reason it’s 100 percent imperative to restrict yourself to cleaning companies that are fully insured. Peace of mind trumps everything.

Spring Cleaning Time !!

It’s our Favorite Time of Year

Spring is here again! It’s time to move the furniture and make your house sparkle as the sun shines in and highlights those things you might have overlooked in the darkness of winter.  Here are five chores that might seem trivial, but will ultimately contribute to both your health and happiness in the home.

Wash Your Windows

Windows collect a lot of dirt and grime in the winter. While you might not notice it as it happens, the first time the sun shines in you will see the dust, streaks, and even pollen on the outside.  On the inside, dust and particles that have been floating around your house all winter should be washed away as well. Around the frames and sills, remove any dry material using a small cleaning brush, a dry cloth or even a small vacuum before adding water or liquid cleaners.  Soap, water, and a small amount of vinegar are great for removing any remaining dirt and debris.  For the panes, choose non-streaking cleaners designed specifically for windows.  You might need to choose different products for indoors and outdoors for the best effect.

Clean Your Moldings

Moldings collect all kinds of dirt and grime.  Scuffs from shoes and even vacuuming, dirt that is kicked up as you clean, and splatters from spills or animals all contribute to a generally dingy appearance.  Although it is very easy to overlook them, moldings should be cleaned annually or they will detract from the overall look of your home.  You can use an all-purpose cleaner, and for ceiling moldings you can dip a rag or sponge in the solution and use a broom or mop to wipe them down. Consider cleaning the edge of your carpets or floors at the same time, because your vacuum has probably left behind crumbs that it could not reach.

Move and Clean Behind Your Fridge

This is a good project for any time of the year, but it is easily overlooked.  Spring-cleaning is a good reminder of the task.  Over the course of the year, a large amount of food, dust, lint, and grime will collect here despite your best efforts.  Move the refrigerator out to make sure you don’t miss anything.  Sweep and mop the floor, clean the edges and back of the fridge while being careful of any exposed coils, and don’t forget to clean the air intake on your appliance’s fan.  While you’re down there check the shelf inside the refrigerator under the produce drawers.  All of this can be done using the same all-purpose cleaner as the moldings.

Move and Clean Behind Furniture

Much like the refrigerator, it is easy to forget how many dust bunnies crawl under your furniture in a year, even more so if you have pets.  A vacuum or dust mop will have difficulty getting along walls and in corners, so it is best to move the furniture from the walls once a year to do a thorough cleaning.  If you use glides or sliders under your furniture, confirm that they are free of dirt and dust.  Make sure not to forget the moldings here, too!  For hardwood floors, use an oil soap to both clean and condition the wood.  For carpets use the crevice tool on your vacuum.  If you don’t have one, use the sticky side of packing tape to pick up debris.

Organize Your Closets

Finally, organize your closets.  In a year shoes, belts, ties, and scarves become disorganized, clothing becomes disarrayed, and inevitably items and boxes that do not belong will be tossed in there.  Check for clothing that has fallen off hangers, or items that need ironing.  Take the time to move winter clothing to less accessible areas of the closet, while moving spring and summer clothing to the most easily reached locations.  Organize your shoes in a similar manner, after vacuuming the floor in the closet.  If you have an upper shelf dust it and wipe it down with a damp cloth, then you can store seasonal clothing in dust-free containers until it is time to rotate them again.

Although some of these tasks may seem tedious or trivial, they are important to do when freshening up your house after it has been closed-up during the winter months.  Removing dust, cleaning up overlooked grime, and generally reorganizing will make for a happier, healthier, more comfortable environment throughout the spring and summer months.
